Pricing (weighted 12%)

Picreel

$19/month for up to 3,000 monthly viewers

This includes exit-intent, and full support: anyone can use live chat, email, or call the phone number indicated on the site.

$69/month for 10,000 monthly visitors

This one bumps your monthly visitors up by quite a bit.

$149/month for 50,000 monthly visitors

Here is where Picreel gets pricey, though it does quintuple the amount of monthly visitors you can have.

$399/month for 300,000 monthly visitors

Super expensive, especially considering OptinMonster's pricing.

Picreel also offers 25 percent off for yearly billing.

OptinMonster

$9/month for 1 domain and unlimited popups

At this price level some of the features are disabled. For instance exit-intent is disabled on this level. If that is what you need a popup for this is not the plan for you.

$19/month for more features and 3 domains

At this price point some of the features are added back in, but not all of them. You still miss out on exit-intent, and it is missing features like full-screen takeover and mobile specific popups.

$29/month for every feature and unlimited popups

This package has everything OptinMonster has to offer. Exit-intent, mobile popups, and full-screen are all enabled. You also get access to their premium customer support.

They also have an affiliate program. If you promote OptinMonster on your website they will give you a 20 percent commission on any sales made through that link.

They also offer yearly pricing for 40 percent off.

Design icon

Design (weighted 12%)

Picreel

Picreel has a relatively limited number of popup designs. The editor is also not as intuitive as it could be. They rely on pretty basic designs, but they do have the option to upload your own code to create custom popups. Of course knowing how to code is necessary for this feature to be of any use. Most users will be stuck with the basic templates.

That said, the basic templates are pretty well designed. They don’t feel dated and they get the job done well.

OptinMonster

OptinMonster has deep design capabilities. They have a number of different types of popup templates and they allow for the creation of custom templates much more easily than Picreel. Most of their templates are very well designed too. They look friendly and eye-catching.

There are a few templates that fall short in their design. Some of the floating boxes and banners are a little plain. They aren't terrible, but they could be more eye-catching.

Frontend Features icon

Frontend Features (weighted 12%)

Picreel

They have all of the standard features that you would expect from a popup application. The flow of the popups is clean because of the user-friendly templates. The exit-intent works well. So far I haven't been able to fool it even on the lowest sensativity setting.

Picreel has respectable features, but OptinMonster offers a lot more.

Types of Opt-ins in Picreel

Floating Bars
Sidebar Popups
Slide-Ins
Mobile Popups
Targeted Popups
Traditional Popups

OptinMonster

Since OptinMonster is so customizable, the frontend user experience is largely up to you. There is the danger of a poorly made popup, but there is also the ability to design the popup to fit your specific needs.

It allows for a simple flow to the popups, which decreases user’s frustration, and hopefully leads to more conversions. That said, Picreel has a similarly easy-to-use popup flow. The exit-intent works every time, just like Picreel.

OptinMonster also allows for different popups on different pages of your website. This lets you make your popups more personal and compelling to your customers.

They also have floating bars and optin boxes that scroll with the user. These are more polite ways to gather subscribers if you're worried about turning customers off with traditional popups.

Backend Features icon

Backend Features (weighted 12%)

Picreel

The design is very user friendly. They have a clean dashboard that lets you look at all your campaigns and analytics with ease. It was easy to start a new campaign. The popup was on the website within minutes. The overall design of the editor could use a little work, but it is serviceable. The two apps are very similar in what they can do here.

Picreel has a WordPress plugin as well.

OptinMonster

OptinMonster is pretty user friendly in the backend. I didn't have much trouble creating a popup, but it was a little confusing to navigate the different kinds.

There are quite a number of banners and floating text boxes that you can use in OptinMonster, and because of that the editor can be hard to navigate. Picreel is slightly more user-friendly because they don't have as many features.

OptinMonster also has a WordPress plugin that lets you install popups without messing with your website's HTML.

Reports & Statistics icon

Reports & Statistics (weighted 12%)

Picreel

It was very easy to set up an A/B testing campaign. They make it easily accessible right from the dashboard. All of the data is available right there in the app and there is a wealth of useful statistics. They provide some eye-catching and easy to read graphs that help to visualize your popup's impact.

Picreel is also capable of integrating with Google Analytics.

OptinMonster

OptinMonster has A/B testing and good integration with Google Analytics. The integration is easy to set up, and it gives easy to understand and meaningful data.

In OptinMonster GA is available right from the app dashboard. OptinMonster also has a number of analytics available without going though GA.

Flexibility icon

Flexibility (weighted 12%)

Picreel

Picreel delivers the pretty standard popup. It is nothing fancy, so it’s hard to imagine using it beyond the conventional uses for popups. It is a great tool for email marketing or promoting coupons, and the editor is more user friendly. There is some flexibility in this app.

OptinMonster

OptinMonster is a flexible application. The different types of popups they provide give you multiple ways to engage with customers. They have deep customization options that allow you to create the kind of popup that is good for your brand, not just a cookie cutter template.

If you want to have a floating optin bar that sits at the bottom of the screen, OptinMonster is for you.

Support icon

Support (weighted 12%)

Picreel

They offer support by both phone and email. Picreel’s support is very responsive and helpful. They also have an extensive knowledge base and very good documentation. The customer service representatives I talked to were responsive and helpful. They got back to me in a very timely manner.

The two apps have a similar response time in their customer service.

OptinMonster

OptinMonster’s support is a bit lackluster.  They have a big self-help section, but no phone line. They have support tickets you can fill out, and they have a form for basic questions as well. Picreel is a bit better.

That said, I got quick responses when I submitted questions to the forms.  The support doesn't go the extra mile, but they are good enough for most run of the mill problems. Be careful if you are going to need help getting your popups up and running.
